Dorothy Cross (b.1956) is one of Ireland’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists. Working across sculpture, photography, film and installation, her practice explores the relationship between humans and the natural world, drawing inspiration from the sea, the body, memory and the landscape of Connemara, where she lives and works. Her work is held in major international collections, including IMMA and Tate. A recurring motif in Cross’s work is the shark, an animal she regards with fascination and respect. She frequently employs shark imagery to explore themes of vulnerability, mortality, transformation and humanity’s connection to nature.
