The Stones of Hollow Hill by James Winnett, Kerdiffstown, 2022

The Stones of the Hollow Hill (2022) by James Winnett is a series of 18 carved sandstone sculptures located throughout Kerdiffstown Park. Commissioned as part of the Kerdiffstown Landfill Remediation Project, the artwork transforms the landscape into a place of myth, memory and discovery. The carvings tell an original story inspired by Irish mythology, local folklore and the recent history of the site, following the characters Brigid and Fionn on a quest to recover a stolen fire. Winnett, an artist and stone carver whose practice explores the relationships between landscape, archaeology, storytelling and place, designed the work to encourage visitors to journey through the park and engage with the surrounding environment in new ways. The project reimagines the restored landfill as the “Hollow Hill”, a mythical otherworldly realm, while also reflecting on themes of environmental renewal, healing and the enduring power of stories to shape our understanding of the land.
