‘Lazarus My Brother’ - Colm Lavelle
Medium: Gouache
Dimensions: 53cm x 36cm
Location: Monasterevin Library
Lavelle’s painting is made up of layers of paint in a style that borrows from both the American Expressionism of Jackson Pollock and the Art Brut of Jean Dubuffet. Lavelle’s loose painting style is reminiscent of the drip style employed by Pollock but the overall look is much more like the work of Jean Dubuffet. Dubuffet was inspired by the art of the insane, creating primitive looking works with textural surfaces using sand, cement, tar and other materials.
