‘Manta Ray 1978’ - Gerard Pollard
Medium: Beaten copper sculpture on a white marble base
Dimensions: 62cm wide
For this sculpture Gerard Pollard used a very hard material (copper) to depict a manta ray, an animal that lives in the sea, almost constantly moving. Pollard manages to take the metal and give it a fluid quality. He has beaten the copper into shape giving it a natural quality. By choosing to mount the sculpture on the marble base in the way that he has Pollard has given the sculpture the illusion that it is floating or swimming.
