‘Provenance III’ - Laurence Riddell
Medium: C-type print mounted on Dibond. Edition 1 of 5
Dimensions: 136cm x 98cm
Location: Leixlip Library
Riddell studied Fine Art at the University of Ulster in Belfast. He lectures in painting and drawing at the Institute of Art Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire.
This work by Riddell, made while on residence in a stud in county Kildare, is made to look like the equestrian paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, like those of James Seymour, but is in fact a photo, set up with a pastoral backdrop. Riddell’s work deliberately tricks the viewer making them question perceived truths, and illusion and reality in art.
