‘Birches at Dawn’ - Liesbeth Fonkert

Born in Holland in 1945, Fonkert studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the College of Art and Design in Amersfoort, both in the Netherlands. She taught weaving at the College of Art and Design in Amersfoort between 1970 and 1977 before moving to Ireland.

This work made of strands of cotton wool and polystyrene, which stand proud of the background surface, and are made to look like sticks. The work is representational without being realist; instead Fonkert uses symbols to depict other objects. The sticks are made to represent a row of birch trees. The colours of the birches are not the natural colour of birch trees; instead they are the colours you may expect to see at morning time in the countryside.
