‘Figure on a beach’ - Noreen Rice
Medium: Pastels
Dimensions: 70cm x 95cm
Location: Athy Library
This painting by Noreen Rice appears to draw influence from so called primitive art, in art-historical term primitive art is non-western art usually traditional from Africa or the South Seas. The primitive art style became popular in western modern art at the beginning of the twentieth century when it influenced such artists as Picasso and Andre Derain and later others such as Juan Miró and Paul Klee. Although these artists created widely different art there are some themes of Primitivism recognisable in their work and in this painting by Rice, most notably mask like faces and flattened perspective.
