‘Borderline Green Sky’ - Sean Cotter
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 50cm x 75cm
Location: Newbridge Library
Sean Cotter was born in Monasterevin, county Kildare in 1969. He studied painting at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He has exhibited widely across Ireland and has works in private collections in Ireland, France, the UK and the USA.
This painting could be looked at as a purely abstract work in a similar vane to Mark Rothko’s “colour field” paintings. The title of the painting however makes it clear that Cotter does not see this as pure abstraction: instead the line two-thirds of the way up the canvas is to be read as a horizon, the blue as sky and the lower section of the painting is the foreground, possibly a field. Cotter takes a flat seemingly abstract work and makes the viewer question what they see.
