‘Sheltered Field’ - Sean McSweeney HRHA
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 60cm x 75cm
Location: Naas Library
Born in Dublin in 1935, McSweeney has no formal art education but has widely exhibited around Ireland since the 1960s. McSweeney specialises in landscape paintings of his home county of Sligo, especially scenes of bog pools and the rugged coastline.
This work is stylistically comparable to the German Expressionistic works of the 1900s artistic movement Die Brücke, a movement interested in nature and primitivism. McSweeney shares an interest in nature with the countryside of Sligo being the main subject of his art. Using a similar palette and style to the paintings of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, McSweeney’s treatment of the treetops is almost cubist, reminiscent of the woodcut prints of Die Brücke.
