Kildare Short Grass film Commission and Bursary Awardees 2022 announced

Kildare County Council has announced the winner of the 2022 Short Grass Film Commission Award.  The award of €12,500 was made for a film to be made on location in Kildare in the coming months.

It was presented to Sound & Colour, a short film which follows Hannah who returns home after her attempted suicide and must face her dysfunctional and emotionally repressed family. Believing that her relationship ending is the root cause of her depression, the family avoids talking about the “incident” at all costs.

Writer and director Emma Foley said "Sound & Colour is a true passion project for me. I am over the moon to be given this support from Kildare Short Grass, allowing me to tell this story and hopefully show these themes in a new light."

The film will be produced by Tamryn Reinecke, Pale Rebel Productions, which was established in 2018 with Emma and Tamryn as Creative Producers. After only a year of working within the film industry the duo produced their first feature film. The film went on to win Best Film and Best Debut Feature at the 2020 Galway Film Fleadh, where Tamryn and Emma were also nominated for the Bingham Ray New Talent Award. It was most recently nominated for three IFTAs for Writing, Lead Actor and Cinematography. Pale Rebels second feature film, IT IS IN US ALL, written and directed by Berlinale Rising Star Antonia Campbell-Hughes and starring Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth, Calm with Horses, Peaky Blinders) had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2022 where it won the Jury Award for Excellent Cinematic Vision. Pale Rebel are continuing to establish their voices as creative producers and expand their slate with an eclectic group of indie genre films in development.

In addition to the commission, 3 Kildare based filmmakers received Short Grass Films Bursary Awards of €1,500 for film development.

Colin Weldon and Jules Charlton received support for Immersion a screenplay focusing on free divers from Kildare who travel to the World Championships of free diving - or apnea - to challenge themselves and the limits of what is possible for a human being in the ocean.

Lee-Loi Chieng and Alan Dunne secured funding for the development of  Where It All Began, where a transgender woman arrives home for her mother’s funeral and is faced with her past and the father she left behind.

SWAN, UNMUTED by Richard Lennon and Roseanne Lynch is an adaptation of a outdoor theatre work, inspired by The Irish Folk Tale, The Children Of Lir, with funding to complete the short film.

Arts Officer for Kildare County Council, Lucina Russell said it is "very exciting to announce this year's awards’, and noted that, to date, the local authority have supported the making of over 40 films through the Short Grass Film Commission and Bursary Award.

The continued interest in the Short Grass Film Commissions and County Kildare as a location for film making is very heartening.  We understand that there is a certain prestige associated with getting such an award and we hope that it creates leverage and visibility for the projects.  We look forward to supporting the film makers in their creative endeavours".
