Creative Places Athy announce the recipients of Making Connections grants

Fifteen successful applicants from/based in Athy were recently awarded funding to support collaborative projects between artists/creatives and communities. 

Making Connections grants were awarded to support the delivery of an art project that creatively engages and connects people after recent requirements for disconnection.

Orla Mc Donagh and Breakout Art Group.
A relaxed and mindful art workshops that help our members communicate and overcome loneliness and isolation, providing a sense of belonging and connection to the community.

Angelina Foster - Ernest Shackleton Legacy. Exploring our sense of place with a local scout group through Shackleton's connections to the area locally.

Nasrin Golden - Remember Me. A pilot project exploring use of visual and audio art as a means to connect with the dementia ward in St Vincent’s Hospital in Athy.

Cathy Callan - Once upon a time (phase 2) Athy Men’s Shed, connecting community groups through creativity, whilst raising awareness of visual language and the value of a sense of wonder in our lives.

Colm Walsh - Modern techniques and traditional crafts in Traveller Culture. A collaboration with Traveller Women and local artists to explore shared knowledge and the importance of our culture.

Griese Youth Theatre & Children's Drama. Collaboration with musician Brian Hughes embark on a Winter Solstice collaboration with young people to co-create an artistic response to material on the school curriculum. The non-formal process of drama and music promotes a collaborative and imaginative response to poetry.

Eyelyn O’ Rourke - Flower Power. Irish Wheelchair Association art workshops using their own homegrown produce from polytunnel.

Eibhlin Kelly / Inclusive Community Arts. Community art with the residents and young people of Flinter’s Estate, Athy and a local artist in creating inclusion and a sense of place through art.

John McKenna - 'I Remember You Well’. A presentation of the life and work of Leonard Cohen in music and word with local artists in the locality.

Ulysses Kevin O Boyle – Crom a boo Writers group. Development of a new group dedicated to bringing writer's together, to critique, discuss and progress their work in a constructive environment.

Shackleton Summer School workshop with artist Mark Richards. Workshops and artist talks with young leaving certificate students on the process of sculpture in the Shackleton Museum.

Mary Pat Maloney / Croí Anú Creative Centre. Bringing a group of mixed ability and experienced individuals together to explore reconnection artistically through human rights themes.

Phillipa Donnellan / Kildare Dance Project. Creation and development of high-quality dance participation opportunities and performance with older people in Athy.

InSync Youth Project, Athy – Drama and Creativity. Collaboration with Crooked House over a ten-week series of workshops giving young people foundational skills in drama.

Ciara O' Keeffe - Story telling and using clay. Creating a space where women can explore through ceramic while talking or listening in a fun environment. The focus of the group is to talk through everyday issues affecting women with a particular focus on perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause.
