Another Season

another season 1

PROJECT:  ‘Another Season’

ARTIST:  Eamonn O'Doherty

Public Art Co-ordinator: Rina Whyte

LOCATION:  Ottomy Heights, Clane, Co Kildare.

MEDIUM:  Bronze

SIZE: Height 2.5 metres

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: The designated site was in an open landscaped area in the middle of a new housing estate at the edge of Clane village and the artist was concerned to make a work which related to this in scale and content.
A giant bronze butterfly is perched on an oversized garden trowel as a reminder both of the changing seasons and of the rural location, with a specific reference to gardening, which is likely to be a concern of the new householders.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  Eamonn O'Doherty is best known for his large scale public sculptures, more than thirty of which stand in Ireland, the U.K., Europe and the U.S.A., and include landmark works such as the Golden Tree at the Central Bank and The James Connolly memorial, both in central Dublin, the Hooker Sails in Eyre Square, Galway, the Famine Memorial in Westchester, New York.  In 2006 he won the international Selvaag/Peer Gynt sculpture competition for Oslo, and the resultant four metre high bronze was installed in September 2008.   He is also a painter, printmaker, and photographer and has won awards at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, the Claremorris Open, the R.H.A. and others. He was a senior lecturer in architecture for many years at the Dublin Institute of Technology, and also taught in the U.S.A., the Middle East, and Paris.   He retired from academia in 2002 to concentrate full time on art, and now lives and works in Co Wexford.
