‘Mountain Lake’ - Sean McSweeney HRHA
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 49cm x 59cm
Location: Naas Library
Born in Dublin in 1935, McSweeney has no formal art education but has widely exhibited around Ireland since the 1960s. McSweeney specialises in landscape paintings of his home county of Sligo, especially scenes of bog pools and the rugged coastline.
This work, like McSweeney’s other painting in the collection, is stylistically expressionistic but the palette is muted, like that of another Expressionist artist, Edvard Munch. Like in the work of Munch the palette helps create a melancholy feeling in the painting. McSweeney uses simple shapes to create an atmospheric landscape scene.
