While many aspects of fire safety are carried out routinely as part of the day to day running of a building, it is important to record aspects of it to ensure that fire safety is considered systematically – and to prove in the aftermath of a fire that fire safety was adequately managed. There are many aspects that need to be covered but as a minimum there should be records of:
- Persons assigned fire safety management responsibilities, and their deputies
- Training provided to those with particular responsibility
- General fire safety awareness training for all staff
- Daily routine checks on means of escape (e.g. that corridors and final escape doors are clear, unlocked and available for use every day)
- Fire drills
- Regular checks and associated maintenance on fire doors
- Regular maintenance on the emergency lighting and fire detection systems, together with copies of relevant certificates
A Fire Safety Register that is held and the premises and regularly updated will meet all of the obligations listed above. There is a template Fire Safety Register and also the Code of Practice for Fire Safety Assessment of Premises and Buildings in the link below;
