New Kerdiffstown Park opens its gates
An exciting multi-use-recreational park to be enjoyed for generations to come
18th October 2024: Kildare County Council is delighted to announce the opening of Kerdiffstown Park, Naas on Monday the 21st of October 2024. Following a four-year construction programme (commencing November 2020), this exciting project, delivered ahead of schedule, remediated the former Kerdiffstown Landfill into a 30-hectare multi-use public park. Using the latest proven landfill management practices and sustainable construction techniques, these works transformed the former landfill site into a fantastic public amenity to be used and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, for generations to come.
Kerdiffstown Park boasts an array of amenities, including 2 full-size all-weather sports pitches, 3 5-aside pitches, several paths and walking trails, ecological areas, vast open green space, a playground, visitor car parks and age friendly seating.
Situated across the park is a series of 18 carved stones that tell a story of the local landscape and mythology – The Stones of the Hollow Hill. The mythical trail has been created by James Winnett, Artist, Stone Carver, Workshop Leader.
Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform and at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, Ossian Smyth said; “This park is a real-life case of ‘turning trash into treasure’. Kerdiffstown Park, a great new public amenity with top-class sports facilities alongside seating, cultural spaces, a playground and a beautiful landscape for us all to enjoy. The Park was formerly a quarry and then a landfill dump which was illegally run and caused significant pollution of the environment. The person responsible for this has been prosecuted and punished. The project happened thanks to huge community and public engagement, along with the hard work of Kildare County Council and with money provided by the government. It’s been worth the wait, and I am sure Kerdiffstown will inspire other remediation projects around the country.”
Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Cllr Joe Neville said “It is an honor as the Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare to see the opening of this fantastic park. I feel Kerdiffstown Park will contribute significantly to the lives of our communities by providing much needed amenities in the area. I want to especially mention the surrounding neighborhoods and thank them for their patience, input, and support throughout the duration of the project. A sincere thank you to my fellow Councillors, the Department of Environment, Climate & Communication, staff at Kildare County Council, the Designers RPS and the contractor Wills Brothers and everyone who has worked so hard, over many years, to make this possible.”
Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said; “Kildare County Council is delighted to have reached this important milestone and bring this significant project for Naas and its surrounding areas to fruition. We look forward to now seeing the communities of Kildare and future generations, enjoy this new facility which boasts an array of amenities to be enjoyed by all”
“Like any major projects on this scale, this achievement would not be possible without strong partnerships and collaboration, working together towards a shared goal. I’d like to thank all those who have been involved in the project at every step and milestone over the years, who have all contributed so significantly to get Kerdiffstown Park to this point.”
