Kildare County Council celebrates World Wetlands Day 2024
31st January 2024: World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2nd February. Wetlands are among the world’s most productive environments; countless species of plants and animals depend on them for survival. Wetlands are indispensable for ecosystem services that they provide humanity, ranging from; freshwater supply, food and building materials, and biodiversity, to flood control, groundwater recharge, and climate change mitigation.
This special day marks the date of the adoption of the international Convention on Wetlands, which took place in Ramsar City, Iran, in 1971.
A number of events will be taking place in Kildare to mark this important date including:
- A morning of action and hands-on scrub-clearing will take place at the Irish Peatlands Conservation Centre in Lullymore at 10am. Booking is required, please email bogs@ipcc.ie to reserve your place.
- A talk by national freshwater specialist Dr. Elaine McGoff in McAuley Place, Sallins Road, Naas at 18:30. Booking is required, please email biodiversity@kildarecoco.ie to reserve your place.
