Maynooth named Ireland’s Cleanest Town
Kildare County Council is delighted to welcome the announcement today that Maynooth has topped the rankings as the cleanest town in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) in their 2023 survey.
Maynooth was commended for attaining a level of cleanliness over the course of 2023 which ‘we have not encountered in two decades of surveying.” Maynooth University campus was given mention, being described as ‘spotless’, with the main street achieving an ‘excellent result for a busy shopping environment.”
2023 marks the 21st anniversary of the IBAL litter league. Cathaoirleach of the Clane/Maynooth MD, Cllr Tim Durkan accepted the Dr Tom Cavanagh Memorial Trophy in Courthouse Square, Maynooth. Speaking at the presentation he said, “It’s a wonderful start to 2024 for Maynooth, to achieve such fantastic results. To be acknowledged for achieving standards that have never been seen in the 21-year history of the IBAL survey is a great honour. This award is a great acknowledgement of the work of Maynooth Tidy Towns volunteers, the local retail community, Maynooth University, Kildare County Council and many others.”
Naas, a former top-ranking town in the IBAL litter league, also performed well achieving status ‘cleaner than European norms.”
Welcoming today’s results, Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said; “We’re very proud of the standard of the public realm spaces in Maynooth, to have it recognised as Ireland’s Cleanest Town is a wonderful honour. Results like this are a great acknowledgement of the importance of volunteerism, of the cooperation between Maynooth Tidy Towns, Maynooth University, our Municipal District Team and Environment team in Kildare County Council. Our sincere congratulations to all involved.”
