Launch of Kildare Biodiversity Week 2024
Kildare Biodiversity Week will take place from Friday 17th to Sunday 26th May as part of a European initiative to encourage people to take an interest in their local Biodiversity.
Kildare Biodiversity Week aims to develop awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to highlight its value to local, national and international communities. Individuals, families and communities of Kildare are invited to take part in events, explore, and enjoy nature and wildlife of Kildare during this week. Kildare County Council has planned a full programme of events across the county to celebrate Biodiversity Week. The event booklet for County Kildare is available here: kildarecoco.ie/AllServices/Heritage/BiodiversityandNaturalHeritage/BiodiversityWeek/
Simply taking time to notice and enjoy biodiversity is what this week is all about; whether that is in your back garden or local park or planning a visit to one of the many treasured wild spots including lakes, rivers, bogs and woodlands around the county, or attending one of the many events being hosted by communities and organizations county-wide.
Kildare Biodiversity Week supports the IEN-coordinated Biodiversity Week, which is a national event. Visit https://biodiversityweek.ie/ for more events nationwide and further information.
At the launch of the event, Dr. Meabh Boylan, Kildare County Council’s Biodiversity Officer said: “Connecting with nature is vital to our health and well-being. It is also crucial that we have an awareness and appreciation for how the natural world around us meets our day-to-day needs, from providing our food, clean water, clean air, clothing and shelter, and how it provides protection from extremes of weather conditions, flooding and much more. Dedicating a week to celebrating the importance of Biodiversity in our lives, provides a wonderful opportunity to explore and appreciate the wonder of nature all around us”.
She added;“It is really inspiring to see community groups and local organisations working with such care and energy to organise so many wonderful and varied events around the county. There really is something for everyone in the event guide, and I expect there will be great demand to attend these fantastic events, each celebrating Kildare’s natural heritage”.
The Kildare Biodiversity Week project is supported by the Local Biodiversity Action Fund, from the Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage, and by The Heritage Council, via the Local Authority Biodiversity Officer Programme.
