Update on Kerdiffstown Park Development
In an update issued by Kildare County Council in March regarding the Kerdiffstown Park development, we confirmed that the project was in the final stages of development and it was hoped substantial completion would be reached in the coming weeks and at that stage, full running of the park and landfill management would move from the contractor to Kildare County Council to carry out final preparations for the park to open.
Kildare County Council is today issuing a further update regarding these final works. The bulk of the remediation works were completed, ahead of project time, toward the end of 2023 with a small number of works outstanding. Final commissioning and checks of the landfill infrastructure are being carried out in Q1 and Q2 2024. This last phase of the final checks on the landfill infrastructure is taking time due to the complexity of this type of work. To assist in this process, we have procured an independent gas specialist to help us with the management of the landfill gas (LFG) and to assist the contractors own landfill gas specialist.
As a remediated landfill site, Kildare County Council has ongoing environmental management and monitoring systems in place, these will be part of the future management of the site, to ensure the protection of public health and the local environment. The remediation works carried out on the site involved capping the site with an impermeable cap, the installation of 87 new gas wells, connection to a gas flare, and associated infrastructure. The efficient management of the landfill gas generated on site involves balancing the gas extracted from all gas wells across the site to ensure that gas generated in the field is captured. The gas is then transported, burned off in the flare and emissions are maintained in accordance with the EPA licence for the site. We have been working to maximise the efficient extraction of landfill gas (LFG) whilst identifying any snagging in the infrastructure since the end of last year.
This type of work takes time and any changes to the landfill gas collection system requires extensive monitoring to ensure it is operating correctly, and this work is ongoing. A new low calorific flare is due to be delivered this month and will help with the ongoing management.
We look forward to confirming an opening date for Kerdiffstown Park in the near future, and we are striving to make this a realisation as soon as possible.
