Housing Grants for Privately Owned Homes
You must send certified income details for 2023 for all household members with your application (this includes pensions). Failure to do so will invalidate your application and it will be returned to you. Refer to the guidance notes for further information.
There are 3 types of Grants available to assist older persons or persons with a disability in carrying out necessary alterations to their home:
1. Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability
This scheme assists people with a disability to have necessary adaptations, repairs or improvement works carried out in order to make their accommodation more suitable for their needs.
The types of works allowable under the scheme can be varied and include the provision of:
- Access ramps
- Downstairs toilet facilities
- Stair-lifts
- Hoists
- Accessible showers
- Adaptations to facilitate wheelchair access
- Extensions
- Any other works which are reasonably necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable for the accommodation of a person with a disability.
2. Mobility Aids Grant
This scheme provides grants to cover a basic suite of works to address the mobility problems of a member of a household. Qualifying works include the provision of stair lifts, level access showers, access ramps, grab rails and some minor adaptation works. The types of works grant aided under the scheme can include the following
- Grab-rails
- Access ramps
- Level access showers
- Hoists
- Stair lifts
- Other minor works deemed necessary to facilitate the mobility needs of a member of a household.
3. Housing Aid for Older People Grant - CLOSED TO NEW APPLICANTS
This scheme assists older people (aged 66 and over) living in poor housing conditions to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out.
This scheme is now closed to new applicants. Only emergency works will be considered on a case by case basis.
The below are considered emergency works
- Emergency structural repairs
- Emergecy electrical repairs
- Failure of a heating system
Housing Schemes for Council Owned Homes
1. Housing Adaptation Works to a Local Authority Dwelling (Council Tenants only)
This scheme allows for council tenants with a disability to apply for adaptations to their council property for medical reasons. The types of works for consideration under the scheme can be varied and include the provision of:
- Access ramps / steps
- Downstairs toilet facilities
- Stair-lifts
- Accessible showers
- Adaptations to facilitate wheelchair access
- Extensions
Note: Tenants of AHB properties must apply through the private grant route.

Appeals Process:
If you wish to appeal a grant decision, please do so in writing to the S.E.O., Housing Department, Kildare County Council, Aras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, Co. Kildare. A nominated senior member of staff will review the decision who was not involved in the original decision. Any appeal must be submitted within 3 weeks from the date of a grant decision. An appeal decision will furnish in no later than 6 weeks from when it was received.
