Major Emergency Management Department

The Major Emergency Management Department of Kildare County Fire Service has prepared a Major Emergency Plan for Kildare County Council (Available to download on-line). This Plan has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Government and is consistent with the Government issued document ‘A Framework for Major Emergency Management’ 2006 (including Appendices). The purpose of this plan is to put in place arrangements that will enable the three Principal Response Agencies (An Garda Síochána, the Health Service Executive and the Local Authorities) to coordinate their efforts whenever a major emergency occurs.

A Major Emergency is any event which, usually with little or no warning, causes or threatens death or injury, serious disruption of essential services or damage to property, the environment or infrastructure beyond the normal capabilities of the Principal Emergency Services in the area in which the event occurs, and requires the activation of specific additional procedures and the mobilisation of additional resources to ensure an effective, coordinated response. The Major Emergency Plan is designed primarily to provide for the protection, support and welfare of the public in times of emergency. The Plan therefore provides for the collective preparedness by the three Principal Response Agencies so as to ensure a prompt and effective coordinated response by them to a major emergency.

Detailed guidance on the implementation of the framework is available on the Major Emergency Management website.
