D-Day Landings: 80th anniversary - talk by Paul MacDonald
The D-Day military landings by the Allied Armies in Normandy, France on 6 June 1944 during the Second World War were a key event in the liberation of Nazi–occupied Europe and subsequent restoration of democracy to Western Europe. The D-Day landings included airborne and naval landings by the US, British, Canadian and other military forces and required ingenious engineering measures such as the specialised ‘Funny’ tanks for clearing mined beaches and mounting sea walls at the Third Reich’s ‘Atlantic Wall’. The Allied Armies also brought the mobile Mulberry Harbours for supplying their armies with weapons, fuel and supplies. The D-Day landings mark their 80th Anniversary in 2024, a key event in the liberation of Western Europe in 1944.
