Operation Overlord was the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation during the Second World War. It involved the armed forces of the US, Britain, Canada and the armies of the governments in exile of France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Poland. The D-Day landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history and led to the liberation of France and Western Europe from Nazi control and heralded the beginning of the end of World War Two.
