The Military Archives
Daniel Ayiotis is the Director of the Irish Military Archives, Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin. The Military Archives preserves and makes available the records of the Irish Defence Forces and Department of Defence from their foundation to the present day, and is the state's most significant repository of documentary evidence about the struggle for Irish independence 1913-1923.
Among the numerous collections held at the Military Archives are the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection, the Bureau of Military History 1913-1921, the Collins Papers (1918-1922), Emergency Defence Plans (1939-1945) and the Uinseann MacEoin Collection.
In this talk, based on his recent book The Military Archives: A History (Eastwood, 2022), Daniel will tell the story of this institution and its evolution over the course of the past century, from an ad hoc and often neglected sub-section of Army Intelligence Branch to one of the most modern and highly-regarded archives in the country.
A talk organised by Michael Murphy, Teresa Brayton Heritage Group.
