Weed Control Trials

Kildare County Council is carrying out weed control trials on a number of Kildare roundabouts.

This experiment is part of an ongoing Parks Pilot Project which aims to change work practices around the management of public open spaces to make maintenance more environmentally sensitive.

The current works involve practical trials on the effectiveness of various weed control techniques including solarisation, repeat shallow cultivation, wool, sheet mulch and more.

Six alternative methods are being tested at six sites around the county, including the roundabout at the R445 in Naas shown here, and other roundabouts in Naas, Kill and Rathangan.

This field work will test the suitability of different methods at different locations with findings compared to results at ‘control’ sites managed for research by Teagasc.

Data from these experiments will contribute to organic site preparation protocols which will support wildflower establishment and protect pollinator habitats.
