Lughnasa Letterpress Family Workshop National Heritage Week 2023

Family workshop. Max. groups of 4, children 8 years old & up.

In our Lughnasa Letterpress workshop we create bookmarks, postcards or mini prints with our poetry or words inspired by biodiversity, nature’s lifecycle and heritage week.

The workshop is designed around intergenerational groups of 4 working collaboratively on a composition. Using vintage metal type on a mobile 1942 Adana letterpress, we set the type upside down and backwards, to print a short line from a poem, a phase or word or verse you compose within your group.

Heritage Week falls between the festival of Lughnasa and the Autumn Equinox, a time when we value gratitude and family throughout generations. Lughnasa is the Harvest Festival, named after the warrior god Lugh. Lughnasa and Autumn Equinox are associated with gatherings to give thanks to the Earth for our harvest, our food, our families and life.

Participants are asked to explore our interconnectedness by printing words related to heritage, and create postcards celebrating our gratitude and compassion for the community of all life. Participants may wish to explore Brigid of Kildare, closely associated with compassion and the earth and are free to bring drawings they may wish to combine with postcards. Brigid is a strong female symbol associated with nature and she is patron saint of poetry and printers too! Imagery and words or poetry to explore include Brigid as saint or goddess, gifts from the earth such as berries, birds, flowers, harvest, the constellation Orion, family, protecting the Earth through climate action, Lugh the Sun God is patron of scholars, craftsmen, warriors and magicians
