Copies Information: The surviving Grand Jury Abstracts of Presentments and Query Books can be viewed via the links below. The digitised printed books have had Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software applied to facilitate text searching. The volume covering the years 1810-1826 is handwritten so OCR cannot be applied. Due to the age and condition of the documents the OCR process is not fully accurate. Please also note that spelling of words may vary from modern usage. The aims of digitising the Grand Jury material are to improve public access, to facilitate research and to serve as an additional preservation copy. The County Archives acknowledges the support of the County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-23 initiative which provided funding to conserve the 1810-1826 volume.

Presentments were decisions of the Grand Jury, usually involving proposals to spend local taxes (the cess) that were approved by the grand jury and authorised by the judge at the assizes. A presentment schedule (or 'long list') of all requests for spending was produced in advance of the assizes, then the ‘short list’ of approved works were noted in a manuscript book by the Clerk of the Crown. The approved presentments were printed as Abstracts of Presentments. The surviving manuscript book for Co. Kildare and the printed Abstracts can be viewed via the links below.

GJ/T/7 County Book 1837 (template) - The County Treasurers (Ireland) Act to provide more effectual Means to make Treasurers of Counties and Counties of Cities in Ireland account for public Monies, and to secure the same was passed in 1837. A county book model was published in 1837 for county treasurers which lays out the suggested classification of an account book for Grand Juries as follows:
First Division - unexecuted presentments (undischarged or respited queries which are contracts which have not been executed, or if executed, have not been technically accounted for before the Grand Jury) and settlement thereof.
Second Division - the applotment, (details of the half yearly (assize) taxation of the county), to be levied and paid into Treasurer two days previous to the ensuing Assizes.
Third Division - the presentments (ready money) conjecturally voted by Grand Jury at the previous Assizes, now accounted for by Treasurer.
Fourth Division - presentments of Public Works, &c. &c. fiated by the Judge of Assize, to be paid off by Treasurer after receipt of Applotment levy.
Fifth Division - detail of expenditure, and the Treasurer’s balance sheet audited by Grand Jury.
Sixth Division - presentments granted on conjecture by Grand Jury to meet the current expenses from this to the ensuing Assizes, e.g. expense of running the County Prison or County Hospital
Also includes Grand Jury Orders.
