Kildare County Council Launches Back-to-School Road Safety Campaign 

Kildare County Council and An Garda Síochána Kildare are urging all road users to take extra care and vigilance around schools as traffic volumes increase and thousands of children return to their daily journeys to and from school. 

Kildare County Council is asking drivers to: 

• Slow down and obey all speed limits, particularly near schools. 

• Be alert for children crossing roads, getting off buses or cycling to school. 

• Never park illegally on footpaths, in cycle lanes or near school entrances. 

• Give extra space to pedestrians, cyclists and school wardens. 

• When you see a school warden, slow down, stop when directed and remain patient.  

• Eliminate distractions and never use a mobile phone while driving. 

Parents and guardians are encouraged to: 

• Take time to discuss road safety with children before the new school term begins. 

• Practise safe walking and cycling routes to school. 

• Use designated drop-off and pick-up areas where available. 

• Consider walking, cycling, scooting or using Park and Stride facilities where possible. 

• Ensure children are visible, particularly during darker mornings and evenings 

Children returning to school are reminded to: 

• Always use pedestrian crossings, school warden controlled and designated crossing points. 

• Follow the Safe Cross Code – Stop, Look, and Listen 

• Stay alert and avoid distractions when near roads. 

• Wear seatbelts on every journey. 

• Follow safety rules when travelling by school bus, bicycle or scooter.  

Speaking about the campaign, The Cathaoirleach of The County of Kildare, Cllr Tim Durkan, said: The safety of our children is a responsibility shared by all of us. As the new school term begins, I ask parents, guardians, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to work together to make school journeys safe and enjoyable. Small actions, such as parking responsibly and following road safety guidance, can have a lasting positive impact on our communities 

Sergeant John Dunne, An Garda Síochána Kildare said: “As children return to school, An Garda Síochána Kildare is urging all road users to take extra care during the school run. A few extra seconds of care can make all the difference. Let’s work together to keep children safe on their journey to and from school” 

Sinead Martin, Road Safety and Sustainable Transport Officer, Kildare County Council said; “The return to school is an exciting time for children and families, but it is also a period when all road users need to be especially vigilant. We are asking everyone to play their part in creating safer journeys to and from school by slowing down, paying attention and showing respect for all road users. Every journey matters, and together we can help ensure that every child arrives at school and home safely.” 

Kildare County Council will continue to work with schools, An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority to promote road safety awareness throughout the school year.
