Kildare County Council Promotes the Domestic Lead Remediation Grant Scheme
24 July 2025: Kildare County Council would like to advise householders of the ongoing Domestic Lead Remediation Grant Scheme. The scheme, supported by The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, helps households with the costs of replacing lead piping or related fittings located within the internal distribution system connected to a domestic water supply that serves a house.
Lead piping was commonly used in plumbing systems in Ireland up to and including the 1970s and some people may still be getting water through these systems. The most effective way to reduce your exposure to lead in drinking water is to replace this piping.
Only domestic residences qualify for the scheme and must be the applicant’s normal place of residence. Long-term tenants of a property must have the permission of the owner. Private holiday homes, properties operated on a commercial basis and properties owned by local authorities, housing associations and the Health Service Executive (HSE) are not eligible.
The grant covers 100% of the qualifying work between €750 and up to €5,000. Works less than €750 will not qualify for the grant.
In advance of applying for a grant, you must ensure that you have evidence of a requirement to replace lead pipes and related fittings. This must be included with your application and can come in the form of a notification from Uisce Éireann OR a certificate by a laboratory accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board OR notification from a registered building professional.
