Kildare County Council Signs Works Contract for Barrack Close Housing Project
19th February 2025: Kildare County Council has today signed a contract appointing Suirside Construction Ltd. as the Main Contractor and Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS), for the Barrack Close housing project located on Woodstock Street, Athy, Co Kildare
The Part VIII design was completed by the Kildare County Council Architects Department. The construction stage design team is led by Vincent Hannon Architects (VHA) with the other design team members including Tom Mc Namara Quantity Surveyors, Tobin Consulting Engineers (Civil & Structural+ PSDP), Coffey Consulting Engineers (Mechanical, Electrical & BER) and Cunnane Stratton Reynolds (Landscape Architects).
The project involves the construction of five new social housing units, known as Barrack Close, and the refurbishment of the existing Glandore House to bring this property back into use. The project is funded through the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP), funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
Additionally, the project will enhance pedestrian access to Castle Park estate by creating a new landscaped public open space, including Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDs) features.
Speaking at the contract signing, the Leas Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Councillor Fintan Brett said: "This project is a significant step forward in addressing the housing needs of our community. The new social housing units and the refurbishment of Glandore House will provide much-needed homes for families in Athy. We are committed to delivering high-quality housing that enhances the quality of life for our residents".
