Maynooth and Environs Joint Local Area Plan 2025 – 2031
24th April 2025: The Maynooth and Environs Joint Local Area Plan 2025 – 2031 came into effect on Tuesday 1st April 2025. This follows resolutions passed by the Elected Members of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District at their Special Planning Meeting on Monday, 17th February 2025 and the Elected Members of Meath County Council at their Special Planning Meeting on Wednesday, 19th February 2025. The Joint Local Area Plan replaces the Maynooth Local Area Plan 2013–2019 (as amended) and the written statement for the Maynooth Environs contained in the Meath County Development Plan 2021–2027 (as varied).
The Joint Local Area Plan represents the successful culmination of several years of close collaboration between Kildare County Council and Meath County Council, in addition to sustained engagement with residents, public representatives and key stakeholders regarding the development of Maynooth and Environs during the period 2025 to 2031.
As a Metropolitan Key Town, Maynooth holds significant importance both at a local and regional level. The town has been identified in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2019-2031 as having the capacity for future growth potential to accommodate above average growth in the region, corresponding with the necessary investment in employment creation, services, amenities and sustainable transport.
In addition to providing much needed residential and employment development opportunities, the Joint Local Area Plan sets out a comprehensive policy framework to help tackle critical deficits in the town’s social infrastructure. To this end, the Joint Plan incorporates provision for the development of vital facilities in Maynooth, including a community hub, library and a dedicated Municipal Sports Facility.
At the heart of this Joint Plan is an ambitious yet realistic vision to ensure that Maynooth is the best place to grow up, live, learn, work, play and grow old, by harnessing the area's unique assets and strategic regional location, to facilitate connected and vibrant neighborhoods where communities can flourish, through leadership and co-ordination, in transitioning to a low carbon and climate resilient future.
