Funding for 23 Projects in Kildare under Community Climate Action Programme
Allocation of €897,000 to support a variety of projects in areas such as energy, waste, biodiversity and active travel
12th September 2024: Funding of €897,000 has been allocated to 23 groups across Kildare for the delivery of climate action projects as part of the response to climate change under the Government’s Community Climate Action Programme.
The approved projects in Kildare include a variety of innovative approaches to the climate challenge in areas such as energy, waste, biodiversity and active travel. They include the installation of 600 PV solar panels on community buildings- enough to recharge a smartphone about 120,000 times per year. In addition to the climate benefits there will also be significant cost savings over time, a real help when energy costs are so significant.
Other projects include fitting wall and attic insulation and retrofitting energy efficient lighting with additional works such as installing nest boxes for swifts, erecting polytunnels, installing EV chargers and providing water refill stations demonstrating care for the environment in different ways.
The successful applicants in Kildare come from a wide variety of community organisations including housing associations, faith groups, resident’s associations, sports clubs and community groups.
Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council explained; “This funding is vital for the groups and also for climate action in Kildare. As we move towards the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 51% by 2030, projects such as these are important milestones on that journey. The wide range of projects will result in a number of improvements for community groups and organisations across the county. It is fantastic to see the innovation and commitment of groups across Kildare to play their part in addressing some of our climate challenges, and we’re delighted to support them.”
Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan said; “I am delighted to support these vital local projects under the Community Climate Action Programme, a landmark fund which is making €24 million available to climate action projects across Ireland, alongside a €3 million contribution from the government’s Shared Island Fund. Communities and Local Authorities know best the climate actions that work for their area and can deliver the most effective climate solutions on the ground. I look forward to seeing the transformative effect these projects will have not only in tackling climate change, but in making our cities, towns and villages better places to live and work.”
