Publication of the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan
Kildare County Council, in collaboration with the Department of Defence, is very pleased to announce the publication of the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan and Curragh Plains Interpretation, Branding and Wayfinding Strategy. The completion of both documents will provide a path on the future of the Curragh Plains, home to almost 5000 acres of open grassland of local, regional and national importance.
In 2018 a vision document was commissioned by Kildare County Council arising from an action from the Curragh Forum, established in 2016 by the Department of Defence. The Paul Hogarth Company prepared ‘The Curragh Plains – A Reflection of Potential’. This recognised that more detailed research, as well as consultation with the many stakeholders of The Curragh, was required. In 2020 The Paul Hogarth Company were appointed for the preparation of the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan. They also developed and finalised the Curragh Plains Interpretation, Branding and Wayfinding Strategy, providing an Action Plan Report outlining a set of coordinated developments for site-wide interpretation, a new place brand for the Curragh Plains and the introduction of a wayfinding scheme.
In 2021 a preliminary public consultation was held online, with 3,636 survey responses returned and 44 emails received. Stakeholder engagement included online meetings, workshops and interviews, all of which informed the Conservation Management Plan.
The Curragh Plains Interpretation, Branding and Wayfinding Strategy will support the issues and opportunities highlighted in the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan. Interpretation aims to positively influence behaviour and appreciation of the Curragh Plains. A Curragh Plains place brand will be an agent of competitive identity building, supporting sustainable economic benefits, promoting unique qualities of the Curragh Plains helping it stand out nationally and internationally as a distinct, unique, authentic and memorable place to visit. Finally, Wayfinding signage helps visitors understand where they are, what is around them and how best to move around the area.
Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said “The Conservation Management Plan for the Curragh Plains aims to protect and enhance this unique landscape's heritage while meeting the needs of its key stakeholders. By working together and using sustainable management practices, the plan seeks to ensure the Curragh remains a valuable natural, cultural, and recreational resource for future generations to enjoy.”
Cllr Kevin Duffy, Leas Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare said ““The Curragh Plains is a symbol of Ireland’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty from its ancient archaeological sites and military past to its fundamental role in the horse racing and agricultural industry. Its enduring legacy reminds us that heritage is not just about preserving the past, but also about enriching the present and inspiring the future."
Dr. James Hennessey, Director, The Paul Hogarth Company stated “It has been a privilege to work on this plan for one of Ireland’s most special landscapes. The Curragh Plains are steeped in natural, historic and cultural significance, while also providing an invaluable resource for those who live and work in the area. As such the Curragh is a complex place to manage, but doing so sustainability is now crucial to preserving its past and safeguarding its future. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to shaping the plan and especially the many local residents who shared their passion and knowledge with us along the way.”
