The People’s Park

The People’s Park, located in the heart of Athy Co. Kildare, is estimated to be at least 150 years old in origin, originally laid out around 1860 by the Duke of Leinster. Within the park there are a playground, games area and a fun and educational tree trail with veteran and mature trees. It is a family friendly accessible park with walkways and seating.

Castle Park playground has a beautiful backdrop in Woodstock Castle, a 13th-century Norman structure. Other features include a pitch for sport and recreation.

Barrow Walk – Courtyard Square to Horsebridge

The 2.6Km Barrow Walk starts at the court- house by the River Barrow. This historic Jacobean style building was opened as the town’s Corn Exchange building in 1857 and was converted to the courthouse in 1891. Continue along the Barrow Path, under the Horse Bridge and Railway Bridge, and along the Canal path to the slipway which leads to the Carlow Road. Turn left along the Carlow Road to St Michael’s Church of Ireland which was built in 1840 on a site owned by the Duke of Leinster. Turn right at this point and proceed by the People’s Park to the Railway Station. Continue left along Leinster Street and back to the Courthouse.

The Fairgeen is a family-oriented play area located on Keenan's Lane, Mullarney, in the old historic town of Castledermot. It is a short walk from the main street.  The playground features a tube slide and multi activity unit, double zip wire, trampoline, swings including a hexagonal swing, adventure trail, sensory play panels and sand play area.  There is seating, picnic tables and a dedicated area to a wildflower meadow, which make it a pleasant environment adjacent to the River Lerr.

Ballitore

Tanyard

The Tanyard is a walled enclosure located on the edge of the River Greese to the immediate east of the main square (Burrow Square) of the old Quaker village of Ballitore. The site is accessed by a vehicular entrance lane, immediately adjacent to the prominent landmark of the Mary Leadbeater House (restored in the 1990’s and now used as a public library). The site comprises a central yard, enclosed by two single-storey detached former tannery buildings, to its north and south.

Ardscull

Moat of Ardscull

The Moat of Ardscull is situated along the N78, about 6 km north of Athy, Co. Kildare. It is a 12th-century Norman motte-and-bailey providing a scenic, free-to-access spot for walking, picnics, and heritage viewing.  It features a large, tree-covered 18-meter-high mound, panoramic views, adjacent picnic areas, a wildflower garden, and historical significance.  A dedicated car park is available at the south of the hill. It is known locally for its role in the 1903 Gordon Bennett motor race.

Nurney

Pocket Park

Nurney playground is located at the centre of Nurney village on the R415. The playground contains swings, rockers and picnic benches and is adjacent to a beautifully maintained wildflower garden. These facilities are maintained by Kildare County Council in partnership with Nurney Tidy Towns Committee.
